LANCE BASS POP STAR *N* SPACE

The workshop took place in July 2003 at the CCA with Mandy McIntosh, Kaffe Matthews and eight pupils from Bannerman High School in the east end of Glasgow.

The pupils visited the Science Centre to view the IMAX spacestation film and contemplate the night skies of the planetarium,then spent four days with the artists making sound and image pieces. The work looked at the prospect of Lance Bass travelling to space. Lance (a former member of the American boyband *N*Sync) recently qualified as a cosmonaut at Star City in Moscow and was tipped to become the latest space tourist to travel with the Russians.

The pupils made field recordings, grabbed text from a fan website, wrote dialogue, digitally manipulated images mangled *N*Sync tracks and constructed animated sequences.One pupil brought an electric guitar to make the sound of a rocket launch from one lush chord and a russian lament was created for Yuri Gregarin's conversation with Lance. Made from a recording of bagpipe playing in Sauchiehall Street.To the left are edited highlights of work from that week.
